Spotlight on Marcela Landres
Marcela Landres is an inspiring editor and amazing powerhouse of support for Latino/a writers. After leaving Simon & Schuster, she began her own editing consultation company where she can tailor fit her expertise to match her client's needs. She is an integral behind-the-scenes editor with a heart of gold; pushing, prodding, and encouraging aspiring writers to become published and make the most of their career. I met her at a writing conference a few years prior to writing The Latino Writers & Journalists book. I pitched her a historical novel, Born In Blood, that she did not accept, however she did ask me to write a book on Santeria. I felt that I did not understand the religion properly to write a book about it and so, very hesitantly, told her that I wasn't the right person for the job, but to please keep me in mind for future projects. Years after we met, when Claudia Gabel, an editor at Random House, was casting around for a writer to pen a book about Latinas and magic for teens, Marcela suggested me. This project, became Rogelia's House of Magic (June 10). Growing up, Marcela did not see a lot of books on the shelves that depicted her Latina experience. She is out there making a difference in the world, bringing diversity to literature as never before.
