A Site for Books and Thoughts on Empowerment,
Culture, and Magic.

JamieMartinezWood.com seeks to provide a resource for unearthing your path to wholeness and full embodiment of Spirit. It offers information about my latest works and workshops, views on earth spirituality and the journey to self-discovery and resources for more facets of Spirit. All is wrapped in a hope and sealed with a kiss that it helps you. The Divine lives and breathes as you. Blessed be.

Earth Mother calls to her children to bring healing to their lives. By healing ourselves we will, in turn, begin to heal Her and our fellow brothers and sisters. Look within yourself to find the answers to your happiness. Know that you have everything you will ever need right inside you. Look to the beauty of a drop of dew on a spider's web or the trusting flight of a bird and know that you are divinely protected and guarded at all times. Invoke magick by believing in your power to create all that you can dream of and more.

Trust in yourself and believe in the love our Earth Mother holds for us. She who cradles her babes in the womb of her ocean belly, in the arms of her gnarled oak trees, with her sweet wind breath and the fire that sparks life and passion. Trust in each other. Know what answers you cannot find for yourself are available whenever you reach out to your sisters and brothers. We are all related. When we help one we help us.

Spotlight on Frank H. Cruz
from the Latino Writers & Jouranlists textbook

I chose to personally interview my subjects in the Latino Writers & Journalist to best capture the spark that makes them inspirational to readers, which is the point of any biography. I wanted to gain a glimpse into the foundation that molded them. In this way the biographical essays establish a commonality with readers and hopefully inspires and encourages them to seek out and unearth their own unique gifts.

Frank H. Cruz is rather an icon in the world of Latino media. He was one of the co-founders of Telemundo and at the time of our interview, he was the chair of the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, responsible for the show Maya and Miguel. He had been a broadcast journalist prior to this and had been a pioneer, ensuring fair representation of Latino themes and relationships in the news and on television. I emailed him to ask for an interview via email or phone. He soon emailed back and not only agreed to have the interview, but suggested we meet at Mimi's Cafe, a quaint restaurant. You should have seen me trying to find an appropriate outfit for the occasion. At the time, most of my clothing consisted of hippie garb, absolutely no high heels or anything that resembled corporate professionalism. I found a skirt, threw it in the dryer to fluff out the wrinkles and went to meet Mr. Cruz. I was nervous, but wouldn't let myself think of the fear and just marched in that restaurant determined to receive him like a human being, not some demi-god. With the right attitude and a most kindly man, we had a wonderful three hour conversation, during which I realized the futility of intimidation. He told me all kinds of stories about growing up, recounting his family's journey to America, the strength of his mother and how he helped her run a restaurant by making the menudo and cleaning up after school. Later I met him to give him a copy of Latino Writers and Journalist book at a country club. He treated everyone from the hostess to the busboy to other guests with the same deference and honest interest in their affairs. It became quite clear to me how this man had gotten so far in life. He is kind, hard-working, open-minded and welcoming. He seems to see the best in all people and situations, making it possible for others to rise to the best of their abilities.

Title of the talk: The Joy of a Magical Life
Description: A connection to the Goddess has the ability to bring about all the playful moments of mother child relationships, underlining the truth that play is a sacred expression of the Divine. All too often the realm of magical practice has become rigid and serious with implications that you can do something wrong. At its heart, magic is play - a childlike dance with symbols, intuition and nature. With the Fool's enthusiasm, we hold lightly to our desires, allowing the joy of happiness to flow through us. In this way, magic becomes real, not imagined; fun, not work; a joyful expression of the light essence that lives brightly in each one of us.

Rogelia's House of Magic as a Play

Last semester, Gail Brower-Nedler, the drama teacher at Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, CA, asked me if her class could workshop Rogelia's House of Magic into a play. I've always wanted to watch my characters come to life, to see them interact and witness the enfoldment of the story I created. I was excited for what would be the World Premier of Rogelia's House of Magic. The first thing we did was establish a common language with the students and a sense of familiarity with the world of magic that is second nature to me. Ms. Brower-Nedler invited the vice-principal to watch me do the ritual in case the prejudice and fear people have about magic rose its ugly head.

By the way, it can be easy for me to get frustrated or even offended by close-minded, unconscious people who think I could be “sucking the souls out of kids.” Particularly when my goal is to empower them. But then again, I’ve noticed that I haven’t stepped down or walked away in the eight years as a public Wiccan author. And I’ve realized that I like being on the cutting edge, educating and watching people wake up to the beauty and potentiality of the magic within.

On the day of the ritual, I signed in the office as usual, but this time I carried a large basket of items that symbolized the four directions and elements, like a candle, a shell, a crystal, and a feather. With these sacred items, I created an altar. Many of the kids were fascinated by the altar and came to touch and feel all the goodies. A few kids volunteered to stand with me and welcome each of the Four Directions. I knew I was in good company, when TK dropped to his knees like a true knight when we reached the north direction. I avoided trigger words like God or Goddess and still raised the energy and vibration in that classroom. The air buzzed with magic and I knew I had shown quite a few people about what magic can really be.

We decided to make this a "black box" production, meaning very little props. Hilary stepped up to be the student director. She cast the other kids and wrote a prologue of sorts that included the four directions that would introduce themselves, their corresponding element (air, fire, water, earth) and colors, and what qualities they share with humankind.
