Who are you Today?

There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter.” is the first sentence of the Scientific Statement of Being by Mary Baker Eddy, founder of Christian Science and my first religion. It was a sentence that I had memorized by the age of nine because we repeated it every Sunday and I think I got to go to Disneyland if I did. The rest of the Statement goes on to say “All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual.”

In part, it is a good idea: there is no guilt for being a sinner, nothing to prove or achieve because you have already arrived – in your very beingness you are spiritual and therefore perfect just as you are, and your soul goes on forever, so there is no need to fear death. The catch for me is denouncing of the good, life, truth or intelligence in our material or human experience and/or existence. This little flaw in my spiritual upbringing seems to be the antithesis of witchcraft, Wicca or any other earth based spirituality. This part of the Statement planted a seed that only by denouncing the flesh, material or superficial wants could anyone attain spirituality or even peace of mind.

Therefore, creating spells to release anger or find forgiveness came with relative ease, while writing, much less performing, an incantation for “meeting a famous person” or “discovering what others say about you” were so difficult. I could ask for prosperity for another, but rarely called in the quarters for my own financial comfort. I was taught to pray for transportation not the red shiny bike – the need, not the desire. While I still believe praying for the need comes first, I also firmly believe that including the desire creates a picture for the Universe to fill. Also adding that lovely line “this or better” because you never know what wondrous riches the Universe has in store for you.

Today, slowly but surely I’m beginning to open up to the Divinity that comes with creating comfort, beauty and abundance. And I’m learning to not always be so obsessed with finding the esoteric or spiritual lesson. I still believe that absolutely everything happens for a reason and also the fact that the reason may not be revealed immediately. We need to process life’s experiences through our bodies, our five senses before we get to the sixth sense of intuition and divine understanding. We incarnated to have a human experience, not to be angels 24/7.

Goddess/God wants us to enjoy life’s material pleasures. Writing for teens and closing my eyes and relating to the teen within helps so much. As teens we are in touch with leisure and recreation. How fun if we could maintain that! In my next book, The Enchanted Diary (released August 2005) I will be exploring fun and hip ways to uncover your power. Even though my style would be to go dark and deep and explore why you can’t discover your power – its time to lighten up. Its time to focus on what we want, not what we fear. Been there, done that, got a million T-shirts and maudlin diary entries to prove it.

Look at your early teachings, religious or otherwise. Do any of them block you from actualizing your true potential, power, or happiness? Do you still believe in the creeds of your upbringing? What would be your Statement of Being? Create an affirmation of your truth - something that you believe to be true to your very core, something that brings you higher to the peace that is your divine right. And live it!

Blessings,
Jamie
