OCTOBER - Summon a Loved One's Spirit

Halloween is also called Samhain, or Summer's End. The final harvest is over and the time of short days and long nights is here. Halloween is the space between summer/light and winter/dark. Halloween exists between the worlds where anything is possible. Like the hazy, purple veil of twilight, at Halloween, the division between those living and those who have crossed, humankind and faery is thinnest. It is the perfect time to remember a loved one. If there is someone you love who has died, try this ritual and see if you can make the connection.

People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Those who cross our paths for a short time often give a gift when they leave us. In this way, their message is imprinted on our hearts like footprints in the sand, never to be erased by time or memory. We are blessed with many people in our lives and even though some of them have died we can still talk or be with them. Most of the time this connection will not be in the form of having a chat with our loved one sitting at the end of our bed, although it can be, often what happens is that we still experience his or her presence. The room may turn cold, the wind might pick up unexpectedly, we may be surrounded in an an aura of color, or animals with peculiar faces may cross our paths. Since we are all energy, even in the spirit form, often our loved ones communicate with us through electricity. Lights may flicker, computers may randomly turn on, or the phone will ring but no one answers. A great time to do this spell is on Halloween, also known as Samhain. Otherwise cast this spell on a Saturday. Place a picture of your loved on on a north facing wall, or if you can position an alter in this direction. Light a white candle. If you know your loved one's favorite scent , either burn that incense, wear the perfume, or place the flower on the altar. If you do not know his or her favorite scent either gather lavender sprigs, wear a few drops of oil or burn it as an incense or oil. Light another candle of your loved one's favorite color and place it on the altar. Prepare a snack for the two of you (Or however many people are in the ritual), making sure to include to include your loved one's favorite foods. Sit in front of your altar and imagine her or him sitting next to you. Relax, you are only calling on the spirit of a loved one. This is called a dumb super. Watch for any little sign, which may also come later in a dream.
