MARCH -- March Spell

March is known for a time a of renewal. For Native people, it is often considered to be their new year. You often hear people talk about spring cleaning. This tradition hails from a time when people wanted to rid themselves of winter blues, sickness, or staleness (particularly if they were trapped in doors for a long time). Try making a besom, a traditional broom, for magic makers and wise women. Talk a walk somewhere special where you could happen upon a branch one to two inches in diameter. Think about the things that you want to bring forth this new year. The branch will call to you. Never break the branch off a tree. You will find one lying on the ground. Trust me.

Now for the next part, you can use just about anything. You can use straw, lavender, long eucalyptus leaves, hay, rosemary. You can gather these plants, or even buy dried flowers from a craft store or the hay from a feed store. Get creative. Bind the plant to the end of the stick or staff with twine or leather or thick ribbon, but make sure it's tough. If you really want you can glue the straw or whatever plant matter you have to the end of the stick, then wrap the ribbon, or twine or hemp to hold it in place. You can glue semi-precious stones onto the staff or carve runes or symbols onto it. You can wrap the ribbon all the way up the stick. Whatever you do, keep focused while you work. Think about how this besom will cleanse your area so that you can bring something new and fresh into your life. After you've made your besom, light a green candle. Lightly sweep (really you're moving energy, you aren't physical sweeping) out the door. Say: "I sweep away all that is stale and old. I cleanse this place of the winter's cold. To make room for the pureness of light, That brings to me goodness day or night. By my will so mote it be. This I make true three times three times three. Blessed be."
